Information About Ryan

Personal Description: I am currently a fourth year medical student at the University of Cambridge available to tutor students in the north west of Northern Ireland during holiday time. During term time, I am also available for online tutoring via free videophone services and/or instant messaging. In addition to studying medicine, I also teach physiology to first year students at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge (as part of the supervision system).

My BA Hons (University of Cambridge) is in Biological and Biomedical Science, for which I studied pharmacology (major subject) and human genetics (minor subject). My dissertation was on the topic "Is MAC a good endpoint in studies of the mechanisms of general anaesthesia?" for which I was awarded Class I. Within medicine I have a particular interest in anaesthesia and critical care, both clinically and from a research perspective.

Tutoring Experience: I currently supervise first year students in physiology at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge (this involves small group teaching designed to suplement lectures). In addition, I have previous experience of teaching GCSE and A Level as a private tutor and have experience of assisting in the teaching of first aid to volunteer first aid and ambulance providers.

Tutoring Approach: I like to start at a very basic level, often determined by the student, and build up layers of knowledge at a pace that differs between individuals, using a variety of techniques taking into account different learning styles. I feel it is best to allow the student to dictate the pace of learning so that time spent teaching is meaningful and productive.

From Caoimhe (5/5): (GCSE Biology) Ryan is an excellent tutor. He has helped me so unbelievably much over the past month. I have to retake my GCSE Biology exam in May. He has an absolutely brilliant method of teaching. He explains things slowly and thoroughly going back over things at the start of each lesson from previous lessons. He uses appropriate everyday examples to explain certain topics which makes it easier to understand. He also spends time outside of the lesson preparing what we are going to do at each lesson. He marks different exam papers for me and spends time going over my weak parts in each lesson. I would definately recommend Ryan, he has really improved my knowledge and understanding of Biology and I now feel a lot more confident about sitting my exams next month. Thanks Ryan!
