Information About Rowan

Personal Description: Last year I graduated with a master of physics from the University of Oxford (first class). I am currently doing a PhD in condensed matter physics at Leeds University. I am a friendly, approachable person and very enthusiastic when it comes to maths and physics, I would love to pass on some of that knowledge and enthusiasm on to a new generation of scientists. My help would be very suitable for those students wanting to get a head start on next years material or those who want a refresher course in previous material that they perhaps struggled with and will need to know for next year. They could also be very useful for students who are thinking of applying for Oxford or Cambridge in October.

Tutoring Experience: I am a member of the STEM ambassador scheme which involves going into schools and promoting science and technology to students through various interactive projects. All STEM ambassadors are CRB checked. During A-level I spent some time helping year 6 science students with experiments, I also spent one year as a mentor to two GCSE students at Almondbury high. In addition to this the University of Oxford teaches primarily by tuition, sometimes up to 6 hours of tutorials a week; having experience of this system has allowed me to find out what is most important and helpful in tutorials and how to convey complex ideas effectively and simply.

Tutoring Approach: My tutoring style is flexible and would depend on the level and ability of the student and would also depend the aim of the tutorials. For learning new material, making the concepts clear through patient explanation and worked example is the first step towards understanding, this is followed by building confidence in the material by asking questions and setting exercises. For revision tutorials more focus would be on doing exam style questions and going over those parts of the syllabus that the student struggles with. I also believe in making sure the student understands why the material is useful and interesting by using examples from everyday life.
