1998 to Apr 1998: Hookergate School, Rowland’s Gill, Gateshead. I was temporarily employed for one term while I taught a variety of ICT and Business Studies based units to GNVQ students, both at Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Background

AS/A2 ICT. I have successfully taught all six units. Units 1 and 4 focus on the informational needs of business
uses and the uses of information within the context of society.

Units 2 and 5 focus on the hardware and software used to meet these needs. In these units I used a class
based discussion approach supported by handouts containing the relevant information for the topic. Progress
in these units was facilitated and assessed using questions taken from recent exam papers. In this way
confidence was developed in an appropriate and thorough manner.

During project based units three and six, I was fully supportive of students throughout the course, Identifying
and prioritising user needs within the scope can be a problem for students. I made sure that students knew
that they could see me individually at specific times to discuss the actual purpose and nature of the project.
This pointed to the appropriate software required.

This was usually calculation and/or database software such as MSExcel or MSAccess, or in HTML and
Dreamweaver when developing websites. Pupils were prepared for this via tutorial sessions where techniques
were demonstrated and learned in a student centred and tutor supported environment, then each was
discussed in terms of its possible applications. This approach led to a 100% pass rate in every year I taught
these courses.

GNVQ and BTEC
Similarly, I have also successfully taught the six unit course in ICT, five of the units based on a specific generic
software type: word processing; spreadsheets; database/desktop publishing; presentation software and the
other based on typical hardware and its configurations. I taught this via a similar strategy to that employed for
AS.

2002: GNVQ ICT Assessors course.

2001: Cisco Systems Instructors Certificate, parts 1 and 2 (exam results 97% average).

From Julian (5/5): (A-Level Business Related) Peter - your individual approach to teaching was a refreshing change for Julain. Your enthusiasm for the subject and more importantly engaging the student, certainly worked to stimulate learning and encouraged reading around the subject. You initially assessed what was needed and set up an individual plan to follow so covering the syllabus. Many thanks for your input. We will keep you informed when the results arrive (?mid March).
Many thanks.
Best wishes
Liz
