Olivia

I have eight years of experience as a qualified Maths teacher and have taught students aged 11-18 in comprehensive school settings and an international school setting.

I am also an examiner for Edexcel.

I have also held the role of Principal Design Lead, responsible for the creation and continued improvement of the GCSE Mathematics Mastery pilot programme.

I have prepared students to sit GCSE Mathematics, A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics qualifications, as well as to sit International Baccalaureate Middle Years (KS3-4) and Diploma (KS5) Programmes. I have held leadership positions as KS3 Leader in Mathematics, Mathematics Enrichment Coordinator and Second in Department.

I completed a PGCE at Oxford University and was the recipient of a teacher training scholarship from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. This recognises teachers with an excellent understanding of mathematics and the ability to explain mathematical concepts at school level.

I hold a Maths degree and Masters in Mathematics from Imperial College London.

I have had experience teaching students of all ages and prior attainment.

Tutoring Experience

I have extensive teaching and curriculum development experience. Some of my teaching experience includes:

  • Improving teaching, learning and assessment across KS3 by delivering weekly co-planning sessions, regular observation and feedback, and through curriculum development
  • Teaching mixed-attainment classes of students aged 11-18 in preparation for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years (KS3-4) and Diploma (KS5) programmes
  • Teaching students aged 11-18 including preparation for GCSE and A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics qualifications
  • Developing students’ ability to communicate mathematics effectively
    • Creating and exposing students to mathematical patterns to develop their ability to make conjectures and justify them
    • Planning lessons to support the learning of students with SEND and those speaking EAL
  • Leading sessions and mentoring at Outreach events for Imperial College's Outreach Department
  • Teaching at a mathematics summer school for gifted students
  • Mentoring and teaching at sixth form programmes covering A-Level mathematics as well as essential skills for UCAS applications, such as interview skills and university entrance exams
  • Tutoring first year undergraduate mathematicians
  • Volunteering in a primary and special school

Tutoring Approach

It is important that tutoring is tailored to the student.

Once I have understood the students' starting point, I will build on their existing knowledge using a range of approaches such as:

  • exploring the concept using multiple representations
  • discussing concepts with clear mathematical communication, both orally and in writing
  • intelligent practice to embed understanding
  • problem solving
  • (for students preparing for examinations) past paper questions and exploration of examiner comments
