Information About Nigel

Personal Description: I am fundamentally a historian who has had an interest in teaching and tutoring for a long while. I have worked with a wide spectrum of ages and abilities from undergraduates and postgraduates to children with behavioural problems and adults with learning disabilities. I am currently working to set myself up as a freelance heritage consultant primarily looking at providing educational services to the heritage sector. Whilst doing this, I am also doing some outreach work with adults with learning disabilities which is a long standing interest of mine. In some cases I am helping people access college courses and so forth.

I took a qualification in teaching english as a foreign language in order to have another 'string to my bow' and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge that it gave me and the experiences that I had tutoring in a very interactive way.

I would welcome the opportunity to work with anyone who would like to share my love of history. I can tutor at a number of levels and, as an Oxford graduate, I would be happy to help people prepare for their Oxbridge entrance. I would also be very happy to teach english as a foreign language to anyone who likes a patient but, at the same time, enthusiastic approach.

Tutoring Experience: I am an Oxford University graduate with a Ph.D. in History from Glasgow University. I have experience of teaching at undergraduate level at Newcastle University (Modern History) and also in running seminars etc. for postgraduates/staff at Glasgow University.

I have also trained to teach English as a foreign language and have worked privately as a tutor since doing this.

My current training in Heritage Education has also provided me with experience of working with a wide variety of people at a number of different levels to make heritage/museum education as accessible as possible.

Tutoring Approach: I believe that people learn best using a wide variety of methods depending on the demands of the task and the learning style of the individual. My wide variety of experiences with all sorts of ages and abilities combined with my extensive experiences teaching and tutoring mean that I am very well placed to adapt my teaching to the individual.

I am a patient person who is focussed and organised. I believe that I am able to motivate and encourage people and I have had great success in engaging with not just people eager to learn but those who find the process more difficult.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D History - University of Glasgow

  • T.E.F.L. - C.E.L.T.A. - International House, Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Currently taking an M.A. in Heritage Education at the University of Newcastle
