Information About Margaret

Personal Description: I am a 34 year old busy mother of a very active and articulate four year old and I have an honours degree in English Literature with first class honours. I have an excellent reputation for delivering results and all of my students last year achieved the grade they were aiming for or higher. My degree has covered all aspects of English Lit with a particular focus on critical analysis, classic literature and creative writing. I have just recently had one of my own short stories purchased to appear in an anthology and I have a passion for literature that comes across in my teaching methods. I have also studied history with a particular focus on Scottish history, the romantic period and Ancient Greece and a study of the changing identity of Europe and Britain's place within it through the course of the last century.

I believe English and History are vital subjects not only to secure a good university place but to prepare you for life. A sold grasp of English improves a child's writing and communication skills and a solid engagement with important works of literature helps a child broaden their mind and develop a greater understanding of the world around them. In addition understanding world history allows a child to feel more knowledgeable about current events and how history has shaped them and in particular a good knowledge of Scottish history helps solidify a child's pride in their own national identity.

As I am a passionate reader myself, I think this translates well into learning as people are more confident in what you are teaching them, when they realise how well you know the subject material

Tutoring Experience: I have tutored for the last 3 and 1/2 years for several children of varying ages, from primary school children who have fallen behind or have a lack of confidence in their abilities, to children preparing for their standard grade and higher grade exams. My most recent students just achieved 3 A's 2 B's and a standard grade credit pass in recent examinations I have several reference letters of recommendation and four of the children I tutored last year went on to achieve a level 1 credit pass in their standard grade English and another of my students has recently passed their higher grade English with an A and their higher grade history with a B.

Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to treat every student as an individual. Although I employ several tried and tested techniques to help a student revise and develop skills such as analytical close reading, confident essay writing and effective revision, every student has their own strengths and weaknesses, their own particular way of learning. I believe the better you understand the student the more you will see them progress. I also believe in instilling a passion for the subjects into a student. No-one learns well when bored, but when shown a different way to look at the material they are studying and reigniting their interest in the subject you enhance and improve the learning experience. This is a particularly effective technique for younger students and allows them to actually develop a love for literature and the past. In older students it takes away the dry impression most children have of subjects like History and English and allows them to engage with it more. To achieve this I use a mix of traditional tutoring techniques and some more interactive learning exercises. I also try to make lessons a little different, so that the student enjoys the session.

I firmly believe that if you make learning fun, they will have fun in learning.

From Rhonda (5/5): (GCSE English) unfortunately I was unable to take up Margaret's services, due to my son's reluctance to accept that he needed help in English. There was therefore no point in wasting her time. I was very appreciative of her prompt response and friendly manner however.

Reply from Margaret: Many thanks Rhonda please do not hesitate to get in touch if needed

From Martine (5/5): (A-Level English) Hi Margaret, Allanah was pleased with the first session, although this may not have shown as she was tired. She is happy with the structred programme you are setting. She is feeling a bit more confident now. Can I bring her at 6pm next week now i know where to come?

Thanks
Martine

From Maureen (5/5): (A-Level English) Heather was very happy with her first session and how well it went. She felt comfortable and felt like it helped her a lot, especially for being the first session.

Reply from Margaret: Thank you very much for the lovely feedback Maureen, I am looking forward to working with Heather, so far she has been very keen, willing to learn and a joy to work with.

Margaret
