Information About Lois

Personal Description: I am a research psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry at KCL in London, and am a highly experienced lecturer and tutor. My approach is about understanding what aspects of psychology a student finds difficult, so that tutoring addresses each person's problem areas and helps them build on their strengths. I understand anxiety and stress, as these are the areas I am currently researching, which helps!

Tutoring Experience: I have been an associate lecturer for seven years, first at Cardiff University (MSc Psychiatry) and now at the Institute of Psychiatry (MSc Child & Adolescent Mental Health). Teaching topics include all the areas currently covered by A level curricula.I specialise in teaching research methods, statistics and biological psychology to students who lack confidence in these areas.

Tutoring Approach: Psychology is NOT a pure science, but it does help us examine and explain human behaviour using scientific methods. I use real-life situations and current news items to make the theory and empirical evidence I teach accessible, memorable and relevant. I like to make sure that my students learn transferable skills - essay-writing, critical analysis, finding relevant references - as they increase their knowledge of psychology.

Qualifications:
  • 2008: PhD Cross modal-perception: Studies in ASD, BAP and typical development - Cardiff University (Doctorate)
  • 2003: MSc Research Methodology - Cardiff University (Masters)

From Kate (5/5): (University Psychology) Lois really brought the subject to life for me, she turned something the OU had managed to make very dull and boring into a fascinating subject! I feel pretty confident about the exam she helped me study for and I am full of motivation for the next course!

From Aj (5/5): (University Psychology) Lois is a phenomenal tutor and she is highly knowledgeable in her subject area – psychology. Her excellence comes from knowing what it feels like to be a learner. The most powerful single fact which enhanced my achievement was her feedback on my assignments which were constructive, positive, encouraging and clearly targeted. This contributed greatly in me attaining a First Class Honours. I cannot recommend Lois enough for her empathic and inspirational approach. I am now smiling with satisfaction for a job well done and I hope she is too.

Reply from Lois: Another 1st for one of my tutees! I couldn't be more proud of AJ - she is such a strong brave young woman who overcame tremendous life obstacles to achieve her well-earned grade

From Claire (5/5): (University Psychology) Lois has been an amazing help through my last year at university. Her support and advice helped me to understand the various assessments on my course and imrpove my overall writing style and ability to complete assignments. With all this help I achieved a First class degree and I feel this would not have been possible without her guidance.

Reply from Lois: I could not be happier with this result for Claire! She works really hard and has great ideas, so she deserves her First. Writing scientifically is about clarity, precision and structure; it's a skill that Claire was determined to acquire.

From Paulene Gloria (5/5): (University Psychology) Lois is a superb tutor with a warm approachable manner, she is easy to speak to and has an enormous wealth of knowledge. I would highly recommend Lois.

Reply from Lois: Working with people online can be difficult so it's important to identify what help you need which Paulene did early on in our conversations; now she's able to define her dissertation research questions clearly the writing up stage should be fine!

From Graeme (5/5): (A-Level Psychology) Excellent tutor, who helped me progress through my syllabus. Always had a positive manner which encouraged me to work even harder. Reliable, approachable and really helpful.

Reply from Lois: Graeme really deserves to do well with his A levels - we worked hard together, and the effort he put in between our weekly sessions ensured that he made the most of his tutoring time. An excellent student!

From Joshua (5/5): (University Psychology) Lois is an excellent tutor.

Her knowledge of Cognitive and Biological Psychology is second to none. This is reinforced by intense passion and enthusiasm for the subject itself. Her style of teaching was extremely beneficial for me, as she was able to simplify various complex theories in such a way that they made perfect sense.

Without Lois’s help I feel I would never be able to achieve the necessary grades.
I would recommend Lois to anyone.

Thanks for everything Lois.

Reply from Lois: Thank you Josh! Josh and I had to work together for a very brief but concentrated time, and I really enjoyed it - he has a talk/write/reverbalise learning style that is different from my other tutees, so I feel like I learnt a lot from Josh too.

From Hannah (5/5): (University Psychology) Lois is an exceptional tutor with an outstanding understanding of all things psychology. She has really helped me understand and improve my essay writing and really does simplify things. I would highly recommend her as a tutor.

Reply from Lois: Hannah is a lovely woman and I enjoy working with her, so this feedback is very pleasing!

From Annie (5/5): (A-Level Psychology)
