Personal Description: I am 56 years of age and retired from full time Maths teaching in one school in 2009. I have a daughter and a son - both good at Maths - both accountants. I have a partner - she is a Head of Maths. I have always written Maths materials throughout my career, trying to incorporate interesting aspects of Mathematics, especially investigations. I wrote two Maths text books around 1990 - these were in publication for 10 years. I have been involved in various initiatives in Mathematics in Shropshire over the whole of my career - the latest being Functional Skills. I had also been a Coursework marker and examiner for AQA for about 15 years before it was phased out. I have taught for 32 years and am took early retirement in 2009. I have since concentrated on one-to-one tutoring. I am a fit person. I play squash, badminton and golf on a regular basis. I am Secretary of Horsehay Village Golf Club. I also indulge in hill walking as well as being a regular film and theatre goer. In my time at my present school, I organised many activities out of school, especially camping trips involving climbing, canoeing, etc. I still accompany and help supervise the school's annual skiing trip to Italy.

Tutoring Experience: I started teaching at Madeley Court School in 1977. In my 6 years there, I introduced A-level Further Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Studies. I also introduced GCSE Statistics and Computer Studies… I became Head of Maths at the Grange School Shrewsbury in 1983 and retained that post as well as being Assistant Head until this year. It was during my time at the Grange that I wrote two Maths text books. Although my main teaching in recent years had been at GCSE level, I always taught pupils AS-level Maths when they completed their GCSE early. Since my retirement I have tutored a large number of students at AS and A2 level as well as GCSE. I have covered Edexcel, OCR (MEI) and AQA exam boards. I am presently the Distance Learning Tutor for A-level mathematics for Shrewsbury College. I teach Level 3 (Access to Degree) students at Wolverhampton College. I am also marking AS Decision Mathematics for Edexcel and Core 1 for OCR. Although I have tutored Further Maths A-level students, the speed at which the student has to work in College means that there's always too much to do or too many problems to cover in one (or even two) hours. I do prefer single A-level students (and GCSE).

Tutoring Approach: I like to find out what each tutee knows, trying to assess their Maths ability level. I try to tease out the best method by which each tutee will learn their Mathematics. I write and supply interesting materials to assist the learning process, using a variety of available Mathematics Software resources (within copyright regulations) as appropriate. I do require my tutees to get themselves involved in work between sessions to demonstrate learning, understanding and progression. Although my GCSE students tend to have one hour, my A-level students generally have two (or even three) hours. Each student has different needs at different times of the course.
