Information About John

Personal Description: I have been teaching English for about 17 years in a number of different countries and in a wide variety of schools and institutions. I have taught in highly academic schools, ‘Special Ed.’, an engineering college, a prison for young offenders and many ‘run -of -the-mill’ schools.
I love my work and get a great deal of personal satisfaction in watching my students progress.
I regard the study of English Language and Literature as a vital tool in my students’ understanding and development as a person as well as a functional necessity.
Having worked and travelled in such a diverse range of teaching situations, I am quite adept at establishing a good, professional and supportive relationship with my tutees.

Tutoring Experience: I entered the teaching profession as a 'Mature Student' after a number of years working and travelling. I feel that the experiences I gained during that time, working on farms, buildings sites, oil rigs and factories have been enormously beneficial to me in the classroom
I have successfully taught and tutored students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. I feel my expertise is most effectively used at Secondary level, but I have also tutored adults, scientists, engineers, business people and even a journalist. (Actually, the standard of writing in most journalism is so bad that perhaps I should do more.)

Tutoring Approach: Working one-to-one, or in a small group, enables me to tailor my work to the needs of the individual in a way which is much more difficult in a ‘normal’ classroom. In some parts of the world where I have worked, I was expected to do the work for the tutee. I refused. My objective is at all times, to give the tutee the ability to function independently at their best in the subject . “Give a man a fish… ”
I enjoy working with motivated students and will always match their commitment with interest. With less motivated students, my objective is to understand ‘why’ and to address that issue. If I can not help, I will discuss the matter with the student and, where appropriate, the parents.

From Janette (5/5): (A-Level English)

From Valerie (5/5): (GCSE English) Since you agreed to help our son we have noticed a marked improvement in his enthusiasm for English. You encourage him to think, make connections and produce work more effectively.
He feels you explain and describes things more clearly. I feel it's your enthusiasm for the subject and easy going manner which motivates and encourages him.
In the long term it will be his motivation and effort which will decide the outcome of exams but we really appreciate your time, effort and dedication.
Many thanks, Val.

Reply from John: Thank you Val. It's a pleasure to work with Sean.

From Susan (5/5): (A-Level English) I am delighted with the way the arrangement is working out. The speed and patience you showed initially helped us reach a decision to proceed with a tutor more easily. Your first visit to allow us to meet you was very welcome and helped us to feel we were doing the right thing. I feel confident in your ability to help Stuart and believe that you are establishing a rapport. He feels able to ask for your help and is willing to listen and take on board your suggestions. We very much appreciate the extra effort that you give willingly over and above the time you are with Stuart. His skills, knowledge and understanding are developing as his confidence and self-belief.

From Joanne (5/5): (University English) Apologies if I I have been late responding - I would rather reply after the Higher results when I have something that I can measure progress with.

Having said that - I have found John to be excellent. He is prompt for lessons, stays longer than necessary, is very well prepared, relates positively to my daughter extremely well and, in general, gives well beyond what I would have expected.

I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone and consider myself lucky that he was available. The paradox is that the better he is at his job - the less I will need him!
