Information About James

Personal Description: I am 23 years old, and originally from the small island of Malta in the Mediterranean. I have just finished my Masters course at the Unviersity of Oxford in Integrative Bioscience, which attempts to cover all possible fields in biology and is a very intensive and highly-regarded degree.
I am confident and outgoing person, and enthusiastic to help others. I take pride in seeing understanding bloom in a student. I love interacting and meeting new people and find new things and people fascinating. I am also an enthusiastic breakdancer and gymnast. Also, and somehwat cliched, I am an avid reader and devour anything that comes my way.
I love animals, especially canids.

Tutoring Experience: I have taught breakdancing for over a year now, to individuals of all ages. This has given me the confidence and attitude that I believe is necessary to individually tailor my approach to each student. Further, I have often been requested to give informal tutoring to friends at university and to my younger cousins. I also worked with an English language school as a Social Leader, which involved looking after the children and making sure that they were enjoying themselves. This has provided me with a very outgoing attitude and I am able to put the student at ease.
Over the years I have experience many different teaching establishments (day school in Malta, boarding school in York, undergrad at the University of Edinburgh and postgrad at the University of Oxford) and have been able to assimilate all the best concepts and teaching methods that I have experienced over the years.

Tutoring Approach: My approach is very simple. If a person wants to learn then there is no such thing as a stupid question. The student has to realise that there is no shame in not knowing something. You can only learn by asking someone that already knows.
Also I believe that it is more important to create students who can critically think, rather than just rote learning. I allow the student to follow their own train of thought and see where that leads, I do not just give them the information and expect them to memorise it. This interactive and discussion-based method creates individuals that are better able to cope with further study and eventually will not need a tutor to help them, but be confident enough to tackle the subject on their own.
