Information About Ian

Personal Description: I am actually a highly qualified and experienced teacher of all modern styles of guitar playing! However, I also have a passion for philosophy and am currently researching for a Ph.D. with the School of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia.
I thoroughly enjoy interaction with all my private students, many of whom have become lifetime friends, and am actually very grateful for what they have taught me!
I have also spent a considerable time as a single parent and so understand the trials and tribulations both of the younger learner and of their parents!
I currently teach in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk but will soon be available for private tuition in the Norwich and Wymondham areas. If this is not convenient I may otherwise be able to offer distance learning opportunities.

Tutoring Experience: I have been a fully professional private tutor for more than 25 years.
My current passion, related to my research, revolves around the 'separation' of mind from body during performance and I currently offer guitar courses geared to this end.
(My primary Ph.D. supervisor is from the School of Philosophy; my secondary supervisor is from the School of Music. You may also wish to review my information held in the music section of this site.)

Tutoring Approach: All students are individuals (although under the philosophical tradition of 'personhood' this could be refuted)!
For those considering formal higher education in the field of philosophy I am very happy to provide a general introduction.
My general expertise is in the field of consciousness; personhood; personal identity etc. however, if you are already enrolled in a course I will be happy to review the syllabus to see where I may be able to help. I am also happy to proof read your work or provide assignment/exam advice. I am always more than happy to debate!!
If you forward your specific requirements I will be honest about my ability to help.

Qualifications:
  • I have higher degrees in music and philosophy (MA in philosophy) and am currently researching for a Ph.D. at the University of East Anglia.

From Lisa (5/5): (Beginner Guitar) I thought that the site was easy to use and I made contact with Ian without any problems. Ian has proved to be a great teacher for my son, who has specific learning needs following a brain tumour. Ian has been patient and understanding about my son's requirements. My son is extremely happy with his tuition and is enjoying his lessons which he finds both stimulating and therapeutic.

Reply from Ian: Thank-you for the feedback. Rory is a pleasure to teach and I have no doubt whatsoever in his capability to become an accomplished guitarist. He has the passion and determination! Happy Christmas and I look forward to seeing you both in the new year.
