Information About Helen

Personal Description: I am a graduate in learning styles with a focus on english and drama/theatre. I have an active interest in all types of texts (novels, poetry, drama and essays) and specialise in essay technique (helping with advice on structure, organisation of material and clarity of expression).

I also work as a youth theatre leader and drama coach and can therefore support LAMDA, Trinity College, the Arts Award, exam preparation, Drama School interview/audition preparation and in the development of monologues.

Tutoring Experience: I have been working as a tutor for 15 years and have had students aged from 8 to 50 years. Teaching has taken place both in person and via **Contact Detail Removed**.

Tutoring Approach: I think it is important that all lessons are geared to the specific needs of the student. Consequently, I try to make sessions as collaborative as possible, and encourage as much contribution from the student as possible. Ideas only stick through engagement and participation - not lecturing - so I will try to make texts/subjects as interesting and relevant as possible. However, I also acknowledge the necessity of a methodical approach, particularly with reference to exams, so I am happy to discuss the process of putting together an essay - length, time management, structure etc.

An initial meeting will always be arranged before tutoring is confirmed, to make sure that the student and tutor will be able to work together.

From Natalia (5/5): (Secondary English) Helen is excellent - she is conscientious, thorough and firm. She teaches my 12 year old son, who studied abroad for 9 months and is supposed to sit 13+ this autumn. She has managed to establish good channels of communication with him and, while keeping the distance, earned his respect and understanding that he should do his very best at the lessons. Highly commended.

From Retu (5/5): (A-Level English) My daughter has been using Helen only for 3 weeks and there is already a vast improvement with her assignments she has jumped 3 grades up in that time. I am so pleased to have found Helen she is an absolutely fantastic tutor and has a great way of explaining to students on a level they understand. Can't say enough she is brilliant.

From Lucy (4/5): (GCSE English) Only had first lesson but all seems to be going well.

From Helen (4/5): (GCSE English) Helen was very patient with James and helped him to bring his knowledge and practical exam experience up to levels where he is confident he can do well. Thank you for all your help, he has learnt more than he realises!

From Lisa (5/5): (GCSE English) Helen is an excellent find! Very proffesional in a relaxed environment,my daughter actually enjoys her sessions and feels more confident!

From Yvonne (5/5): (GCSE English) my son did very well under the care of helen- he managed to gain a gcse level C prior to helen's individual care he was only managing to achieve level d + e.highly recommended. helen is very keen on ensuring the student takes responsibility for their own actions + learning has to come from them ,it has to be a joint partnership.

From Natasha (5/5): (Secondary Entrance Exams) Dear Helen

Thank you so much for the help and surport that you gave to Jospeh to pass his 13 plus, he has settled in really well. thank you again lets get marcus passed for his 11 plus in January x

Natasha

From Robin (5/5): (Casual Learner English) As a professional in my 20s struggling with written English I found Helen an excellent and supportive tutor. I greatly enjoyed my lessons with her, and her guidance has helped me to improve my work. Written English is something which I will always find hard, but the constructive feedback I received helped to take some of the stress out of writing a PhD thesis and reports for work. I hope to use Helen again in the future, and I would recommend her to others.

From Heather (5/5): (GCSE English) very approachable and friendly quickly assessed my daughters problem with her english and is helping her in a very positive manner.

From Narinder (5/5): (University English) I found Helen to be a excellent tutor. This is because she is supportive, caring and patient with my needs to improve my writing ability of my assignments. She also recognised that I lack confidence in my written ability and is now helping me to build this confidence. I would highly recommend her as a english tutor to others.
