Information About Heather

Personal Description: I am 30 years old and I am currently writing for a Masters Degree in Psychology Research Methods. After completing my honours degree last year I decided to continue my studies at University whilst working part time. I now work as a Local Area Coordinator for adults with a learning disability. I am very patient and non judgmental, I didn't go to University till I was 25 and now believe everyone has potential and that it is never too late to learn. I live with my partner in Knightswood, I enjoy cooking, exercising and I am an avid reader.

Tutoring Experience: I have had formal training as a Graduate Teaching Assistant through my Masters course at The University of Strathclyde. I regularly teach, mentor and mark the submissions of, first to third year university students. I have the necessary patience and most importantly ability to breakdown and communicate difficult concepts so that they can be understood by anyone. I have many tips and tricks to help with effective study practices and all of these are based on the psychology of learning and memory which I studied as part of my course and now use in my own studies.

Tutoring Approach: I have a specific exam technique that improved my mean average marks from low 60's to 80's hence my first class degree. This technique uses peer based learning where I take on the role of study partner. The technique means that time is used far more effectively and that you do not need to write screeds and screeds of notes in preparation for exams. I typically studied for four days per final exam using this technique, although everyone is different.
I can also proof-read essays, provide feedback and guidance on essays and reports and advise about appropriate style for academic writing. I can help with all aspects of degree work such as effective searching and use of journal articles, correct use of APA referencing style and time management.

All of my techniques are based on current psychological research on learning, memory and motivation to study.

This method works best in two hour sessions. All prices can be negotiated for block bookings etc. Rates include my travel expenses.

From Laura (5/5): (University Psychology) I would highly recommend Heather as a tutor! I had a resit in two weeks time and had no idea how to study for it as I felt like I had tried hard the first time round, using mind maps and memorising techniques yet had failed! I was running out of time and was beginning to panic. In our first study session Heather calmed my fears reassuring me that we had more than enough time! Her approach to studying is refreshing - it doesnt involve a lot of writing and allowed me to prepare for an exam over 4-6 two hour study sessions which would usually take me four weeks to prepare for! And I can say with confidence that the approach does work as I got my results back today and I passed! The tutoring sessions were fun and effective and I will continue to use the techniques Heather has introduced me to for future exams!

Reply from Heather: Well done Laura!

From Elizabeth (5/5): (Secondary Maths) As Heather has only been tutoring my Grandson, it is early days. However, she seems to have a nice temprement

From Campbell (4/5): (Secondary English) Heather has been great and has given my grandson the confidence he has been lacking by proving to him that he has the ability to complete his work, he actually has a smile on his face when solving maths problems and this is all down to the encouragement and confidence he has received by working with Heather.

From Robert (4/5): (Secondary Maths) The tutor is likeable and engages well with my thirteen year old.
She also has the ability to teach maths in an informal and friendly fashion .
Overall this tutor seems a remarkably good find

From Leanne (5/5): (Secondary Maths) Heather has been my tutor now for a few months, im 13 an she really helped break things down and explain them alot better, brilliant tutor and i would recomend!
