Personal Description: Hello there,
I am currently undergoing a secondary PGDE at the University of Edinburgh and I want to start tutoring because I am very passionate about working with young people and helping them achieve their goals whilst making a subject they struggle with more easier to grasp. I also think that my course will be of great benefit to my tutoring as I am constantly researching and exploring new and effective ways of teaching whilst working in various schools on my placement so therefore I have a fresh knowledge of the curriculum and what is required from the students to pass their examinations.
Tutoring Experience: I am only starting out as a tutor although I have worked in a school for a few months helping students who required additional support in English. I have worked in a hospital for children with various learning difficulites, such as dyslexia and autism for four years which I think is also a great benefit as I am aware of the wide range of abilities and needs many young people have and how numerous approaches, both sensitive and patient, need to be employed. Throughout my course I will be working in many different schools as a student teacher so this will be fresh and ongoing experience which will contribute to my tutoring. Lastly, I am 24years old so I firmly believe that my age is of great benefit as I think I understand and interact with younger people better than older tutors and my more contemporary approach to tutoring will hopefully be very useful.
Tutoring Approach: I think it is essential to explore the way in which each child learns. Every child is different and learns in a different way so I would be keen on a first lesson to find out what way of teaching best suits that individual child and take the lesson from there. If a child works better with visuals then I would be more inclined to use spider diagrams and tables, perhaps in certain colours to help them group certain information about a text or poem. If a child responds better to audio teaching then I will focus more on talking and reading out certain poems and extracts. I want the pupil to learn in a way that is comfortable for them so I will employ various techniques to do this. I will also give them small exercises to do so they can grasp each section of the lesson, improving thier speaking, reading, listening and writing skills.
