Personal Description: I am 54 years of age, but having two sons aged 23 and 12 I consider myself a young 54. I enjoy most sports, playing football, golf and tennis and run to keep fit. I am married and live in Ulverston. I spent 21 years at GSK working as a research scientist, prior to that I did academic research for 9 years. I took redundancy recently and am looking to pass on my knowledge in a tutoring capacity.

Tutoring Experience: Extensive supervision of school and university students at GSK, on two week to one year placements. I have been a guest lecturer at the University of St Andrews and have given many lectures there. I have also given talks at local schools.For the past two years I have successfully tutored in Maths, Physics and Biology from KS2 to A2 levels. I have recently been tutoring at Dowdales school in Dalton.

Tutoring Approach: To me the most important part of learning is understanding the basic principles. I feel it is imperative to proceed at a pace that the student is comfortable with, such that a full understanding is achieved. So called "difficult" maths questions aren`t difficult but larger. Breaking the problem down into manageable chunks, which can then be answered then combined back is the way to solve it. Students have to be confident in their knowledge and ability.
