Information About Clifford

Personal Description: I am 30 years old. I am from Lichfield although I now live in Stoke on Trent. However, I am more than willing to tutor in the Stafford area area. I am engaged, and hope to be married. I also hope to start a family soon.

I enjoy most music, and, as my qualifications suggest, I love to read. My academic interests centre around Romanticism (Shelley, Keats, Wordsworth etc), especially its relation to the science of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, although I am also a big fan of the horror genre, and enjoy reading (and watching) a lot of modern books/films. Despite this, I am not what you'd call 'bookish': I enjoy boxing (watching, not fighting), and XBOX live (Modern Warfare 2 & 3 / Black Ops).

While Romanticism is my central interest, I also love, and have studied at University level, a wide range of literature, from Medieval to Postmodernism and beyond.

My study of Creative Writing has furthered my interest in this area, and I am an aspiring author. I have a 30,000 word manuscript I am currently working on, although finding the time to complete it is a bit of a challenge.

Before university I worked in a variety of industries, from Quality Control to making stairs. I have been a manager for J D Wetherspoon, and have recently worked for Stafford Borough Council as a Licensing Support Officer. I am now employed as an editor.

I am easy-going, approachable and friendly but also diligent and professional.

Tutoring Experience: While at College I helped the Head of the English Department teach an English Language/Literature evening class. I worked with students in small groups as well as one-to-one. I also instructed the class as a whole.

While I have not taught since then per se, in my recent role as a manager I utilised many of the same skills and abilities, such as using effective communication to explain complex and new ideas to individuals and groups in order to ensure they are fully competent in the area in question.

I hope to begin teaching an Adult Education class some time soon at Staffordshire University or Stoke College.

I am currently employed as an editor at a government- and science-centred publication entitled Pan European Networks. In this role I carry out a wide range of tasks including Commission Editing, Sub Editing, Copy writing and Proofreading for both our book publications and our website (please don't hesitate to visit the **E-mail Address Removed**) and view my weekly Searchlight articles for exampled of my writing skills).

Tutoring Approach: A wise man once said 'Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn.'

That is how I teach. I believe that unless you are actively taking part, you are not getting as much from the lesson as you should. I will ask for a background on what you wish to learn, and prepare before the session. I will do this in such a way as I will know where I want to end, and will give you a helping hand in finding your own way to the conclusion. If we happen to take a different route to the one I had planned, or even if we arrive at a different destination, perhaps we will BOTH learn something new along the way. Indeed, as another wise man once said, 'By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn.'

I am not an old man with a tweed jacket sporting elbow patches. I am young enough to be able to relate to the younger audience, and old, wise, and mature enough to be able to engage the older audiences on a level. This is key to my teaching ethos. I will attempt to explain and teach in a way that is accessible to the tutee, using examples and language that they are able to relate to. Just because a book was written hundreds of years ago doesn't mean that there's not a 'modern' way of explaining and interpreting it!

I am also more than happy to proofread and/or sub edit any essays, dissertations or papers you may feel require extra attention with regard to English language usage, syntax, spelling and punctuation. I can do this via email with no need to travel.

From Svizinska (5/5): (University English) Clifford helped me with my English grammar usage as well as my punctuation and syntax. As English is not my first language this was extremely important, and Clifford proof read and sub edited my work to ensure it was written to the highest possible quality and, what is more, to ensure all of my arguments were coherent and relevant to the subject. With Clifford's help, I have achieved 96% and 90% in the last two pieces of work that submitted!

Clifford was always available to help, even at very short notice and over the holiday period, and I would definitely recommend him to anyone who is seeking an English tutor!
