Information About Clare

Personal Description: I graduated from Oxford University (University College) with a 2:1 in English, having achieved firsts in Critical Theory and my dissertation on Hazlitt. Since then I have become a barrister at law, a published writer and a professional musician. I have written for cultural and art magazines such as Hand + Star (an unusual name taken from the printing mark of an elizabethan publisher) and Subtext. I love English and am passionate about communicating it's depth and possiblities to others. Ultimately I want to communicate to my students that English literature nuances and affects the culture around them in previously unsuspected and wonderful ways.

Tutoring Experience: I have tutoring and teaching experience in English. I have also led seminars and teaching groups whilst at university. I particularly enjoy getting into the nitty gritty of language and grammar - often neglected by time pressured teachers today. I firmly believe that in order to stand apart candidates are amply rewarded if they can demonstrate knowledge of meter, grammar and rhetoric. A well rounded candidate should be able to confidently deal with the philosophy and cultural heritage of a work as well as its linguistic and rhetorical features. I will work to this end, building confidence and instilling solid exam technique to distinguish the pupil and extend their abilities.

Tutoring Approach: Firstly, through time honoured techniques, I will use past papers and real life examples of language to work on the basics of grammar and language. Secondly, good exam technique and confidence building exercises will build upon any areas that have gone unnoticed in school. The pupil's curriculum and set texts will be used whenever possible. I am aware that many English exam boards now expect candidates to work on diverse areas such as how Shakespeare is presented on film and theatrical interpretations of works. I will bring my knowledge of stagecraft and performance to bear on this. Equally, I will use my own writing experience to help with underlying issues in creative writing work that will improve technique and ability.
