Information About Christine
Personal Description: Born in Nottingham. I trained as a teacher in 1963-1966 at Bishop Grosseteste Teacher Training College. I have lived in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, North London, County Cork in Ireland. I have run folk clubs, Creative Writing classes and festivals. I write poetry and stories and have a few publications. I perform poems, stories and songs at schools throughout the country. I currently run a small poetry group locally. I have a Humanites/Arts degree from the Open University and a Masters degree in Anglo-Irish Literature from University College Cork. I love encouraging people of all ages to write creatively.
Tutoring Experience: I began my teaching career in Secondary schools but later switched to Primary schools. I have also held a Nursery teaching position. Nowadays, when I do supply teaching it is KS1 and KS2. I have done private tuition in the past and two 'children' that I am very proud of was a brother and sister that I taught when they were small are now grownups! I taught them through their Primary and Secondary school days and added help with other subject areas where I was able. Both have been through University - One works in I.T. and the other is a qualified teacher. Through working with them, I have also taught some of their cousins and feel part of their family!
Tutoring Approach: ***Currently I have a pupil and don't really have time for any others for the time being but I can help fairly intensively in school holidays during the day for anyone else. My approach is to help the tutee to feel at ease and to praise achievement and encourage the overcoming of apparent weaknesses in order to build confidence. I try to ascertain what the tutee can do and move on from there at whatever pace the tutee can work at as different subjects present different challenges for different pupils. Some pupils work better when challenged and stretched and others need to go at a gentler pace in order to feel confident. I can sometimes help in other subject areas. I tend to use worksheets on a programmed learning basis so that once the pupil feels confident with an area of learning then I can move on to the next area. Every so often I will give the pupil a little test as well as talk through their progress with them.
