Information About Chiara

Personal Description: I graduated in July 2009 with a 2:1 Bachelors Honours degree in English from Brunel University.
I am a native English speaker, please don't be mislead by my name, my mother is half Italian but I was born in Cambridge and grew up in England.

While growing up I spent 4 years abroad, living in San Francisco and Hong Kong, giving me a deeper understanding of different cultures, allowing me to help those who are not native English speakers to a greater degree

I am currently studying the Graduate Diploma in Law from a distance learning perspective whilst working full time as a practice manager in a dental practice, located in Wallingford.

I am a sociable person who is friendly and patient but firm when necessary

Tutoring Experience: I have been tutoring a boy for 1hour a week, more if necessary, usually on the run up to exams or deadlines since March 2010 and seen a definite improvement in his command of English.
I also tutored a girl in West London during my second year in the run up to her As Level in English, she was successful in achieving a grade B. Unfortunately she and her family have returned to Sri Lanka and I am no longer in touch with them. However the head of English at Brunel University is happy to act as a referee as are my current employers, Dr Stuart Pinkerton and Dr Mark Lawrence.

Tutoring Approach: During my education I found that different people find different areas easier and others harder than each other, no two people see things the same way. Often as a result of this people get bored when they are being taught the areas they understand to a great depth and have switched off by the time it comes to the parts they don't understand as well.

My solution to this is simply to find out exactly what my tutee is having difficulty with and focus on these areas. I then begin with the areas they find easier and create a link to the aspects of English they find harder, making the problem more accessible to them as they begin thinking, 'I can do this' when approaching their difficulties

I am also dyslexic but have overcome many of the problems that come with being so, making me uniquely qualified to help a student who is struggling in English because they are dyslexic

From Svetlana (5/5): (Secondary English) Chiara is a very friendly and enthusiastic tutor. She is helping my 13 year old son and after the first lesson she knew exactly what areas to concentrate on. She always comes prepared and, if necessary, brings additional material. My son's last report was a grade higher than the previous one. I would definitely recommend her as a tutor.
