Information About Catherine

Personal Description: I am an organised, enthusiastic and dedicated professional with fourteen years classroom experience, including ten as a Head of English. I have been tutoring for the past two years whilst my own family are young. My love of teaching is undiminished, and I gain great satisfaction from enabling pupils to acquire new skills and confidence.

Tutoring Experience: Following my PGCE, I taught in Newcastle for two years. I then moved to a school in London, and was promoted to Head of English there two years later. Following ten years in this position, I moved to Bristol where I have been working in various homes and schools around the city as a one to one tutor. In this role, I have worked with pupils aged from 6 to 14, covering Literacy and Numeracy at KS2 and English and Latin at KS3.

Tutoring Approach: There are so many reasons for wanting tuition – perhaps school has been missed through illness, a pre-SATs ‘booster’ of basic skills, extra revision for independent school exams, lessons are not being taught in a way that is accessible for your child, large class sizes mean your child’s needs are not being met – that an initial assessment and discussion of aims is essential. Following this, I put together a programme of study to address the areas of concern that have been raised by pupil and parent.
I have a comprehensive knowledge of all my subjects and am aware that my enthusiasm for them is a great motivator for the children I teach. I am an effective communicator with parents and know that a positive relationship with them, with regular feedback and advice, is invaluable for the child's development. I keep up to date with curriculum changes and educational philosophies to ensure that I am giving the best advice to both pupil and parent.
I have seen the difference 1:1 tuition can make to a child's confidence, and this invariably leads to a happier and more motivated learner.
