Information About Austin

Personal Description: I am a young academic who has a varied background in the social sciences, religious education and politics. I am very easy to get on with, and have worked as a paid youth worker in the past. I believe in setting tough challenges for those that I will tutor, but each designed specifically to enable for a greater scope of thinking than may be required to simply pass an exam.

I have wide interests including playing sports, politics and current affairs, music and keeping my knowledge as up to date as I can in my fields.

I spent many years in my schools' debating team. Their I learned how to think through my arguements, and also how to draw arguements from different subjects which are relevant the one I was debating.

Tutoring Experience: I have tutored some undergraduates informally in Theology.

During my time as a paid youth worker I constructed and delivered courses in citizenship to a cross-community mixture of teenagers and young adults in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I have delivered classes to refugees and asylum seekers in conversational and practical English.

I have for many years taught Religious Education in my local church. I focussed this on not telling peoplr what to beleive, but allowing young people to form their own questions to answer about beliefs and principles.

Tutoring Approach: I have a open-mind approach to tutoring. I encourage the young person to be active in making sense of a subject through it's interacting parts. I feel that introducing trigger words, phrases and stories enables many young people to remember large amounts of information, which can be formed into coherent arguements.

I do expect that the young people do the tasks that I set for extra-work, as I feel that independent study, even a small amount, can give young people a great surge of confidence. I will also help with study methods.
