Information About Anna

Personal Description: Having spent 4 years studying Modern Languages at The University of Nottingham and the last 3 years using business French and Spanish at the workplace I am passionate about the promotion of foreign languages. At university I made sure I studied a broad sweep of modules (from the nitty gritty technical translation modules to Golden Age literature to postmodernism in French and Spanish texts) to ensure that I gained a global knowledge of the French and Spanish language. I also have 2 years hands-on teaching experience teaching English as a foreign language to French and Spanish speaking natives across 3 continents, and a year's professional experience working as a Spanish-English translator and interpreter in a charity legal aid clinic in New York whose mission was to ease the integration process of Spanish speaking immigrants into American society. Languages are my #1 hobby and I make sure that I devote a substantial amount of time into my daily routine to expand my language knowledge retention.

Tutoring Experience: I have 2+ years experience of teaching English as a foreign language in a range of contexts across 3 continents. My first classroom experience took place over an academic year teaching in a prestigious French sixth form college in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) where I saw students through their Baccalaureate examinations as well as preparing post Baccalaureate students for the univeristy entrance exams to some of France's finest "Grands ecoles". I also taught English as a foriegn language when I lived in Latin America to a group of doctors and medical staff- focusing primarily on medical scenarios and role plays. My next bout of teaching took place when I returned back home to the UK and I taught TEFL to foreign teenagers from all over the globe visiting Britain over their summer holidays through a language exchange programme held in my home town of Canterbury. In addition to formal classes I have mentored on a private one-to-one basis students aged from 5-70.

Tutoring Approach: Everybody learns in different ways so when tutoring I do my best incorporate different learning styles into my classes. Since I tutor languages it is of utmost importance that I incorporate the 4 skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) into the class. I have a policy of communicating 100% in the target language as this will train my students ears to the sound of the language, allowing them to become more familiar with the sounds and structures of the trget language, which is the first step in gaining fluency. I normally start off the class with an ice-breaker or a game related to the topic that we will be focusing on later on in the day. I will then normally produce the main exercise. If this takes the form of a written text say from a newspaper, I like to support it with secondary materials taken from other sources such as websites so that my students can work with texts of differing registers. I then end my classes with a more "fun" activity before wrapping off the class with a summary of what hs been taught during the lesson.

From James (5/5): (A-Level Spanish) I cannot fault Anna, she has been punctual, focussed, quick to understand specific requirements and unstintingly helpful.Added to this, she is a charming girl and a pleasure to have around. My son ,James, benefitted hugely from her teaching. I have no hesitation in recommending Anna to anyone.
