Information About Alison

Personal Description: After a number of posts in Schools in Coventry, at Coventry University and at a Colleges of further education I became Head of Physics at Christ's Hospital, a girls' public school. I was delighted to enable the vast majority of students achieve the grades they needed to gain a place at their University of first choice.

I was then appointed Head of Science, with a department of five, at St. Audrey's Hatfield, a comprehensive school serving the growing population of Hatfield. I was responsible for teaching to A-Level in Physics, and providing support for A-Level Maths Students.

Firmly convinced that the best teachers are those who spend time in industry, I joined Marconi Avionics where I wrote software for acoustic and radar systems. Next I moved to Dowty International at Watford on promotion as Head of Mathematical Modelling, supported by a team of six graduates. We were working with a US Aero-space company. I re-wrote their model to meet UK needs, and created two Operational Models which were bought by the Royal Aircraft Establishment. When I last heard they were still in use.

Keen to make use of my computing skills to benefit students, I started my own Educational Software Company and wrote a large number of computer tuition programs, used by abo**Telephone Number Removed** students.

Tutoring Experience: After several part time posts in Schools in Warwickshire and in colleges of further educationI I was appointed Head of Physics at a Girl's Public School. This was followed by three years as Head of Science at a comrehensive school. I have been providing individual tuition for about 15 years and during that time worked for about eight years at a coaching College.

Tutoring Approach: I offer tuition in Maths and Sciences to Primary, and Secondary school pupils, and to Physics Undergraduates. I have tutored about four hundred pupils, very few of whom have failed to get the grades they needed. Two of my ex-pupils are currently at Cambridge and another at Oxford. My pupils appreciate that I am always careful to explain the logical connections between mathematical and scientific topics. I give help to pupils who have problems taking examinations.

Qualifications:
  • 1980: I Have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education - London University (PGCE)
  • 1980: A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a Fellow of the Institute of Analysts and Programmers. - Royal Astronomical Society (Professional)
  • 1979: I am a Member of the Institute of Physics, and a Charted Physicist, - Institute of Physics (Professional)
  • 1975: I have an Honours degree in Physics, and a Masters Degree in Astro Physics. - University of Manchester (Masters)

From Catherine (5/5): (University Physics) I am so grateful to Alison! I'm bot used to failing exams, it hit me hard but Alison has helped so much that I have passed in my resits! I very much recommend her, she has much study skill knowledge to empart. Thank you so much Alison!

Reply from Alison: My congratulations on your examination success. I hope the rest of your course is equally successful.

From Jane (4/5): (GCSE Maths) My daughter gained confidence in some of her weaker areas, which I am sure helped greatly with the exams.

From Joanna (5/5): (A-Level Maths) We are absolutely delighted with Alison's input - to quote my AS level daughter:-

"I never knew that maths could be so straight forward - I have learned more than three lessons-worth in one hour with Alison."

A delightful lady with a gift for teaching - many thanks for putting us in touch with her.

Paul and Joanna Nolan

From Becky (5/5): (Primary Maths) Alison is great - Very supportive

From Amanda (5/5): (A-Level Physics) Although my son was a little shy and uncertain at first he quickly got to like Alison. She is very kind and has helped re-assure him with the areas of Physics he was uncertain of. I can happily say he is due to sit his AS Physics next week with much more confidence. He hopes to continue with Alison next year with his A2s.

Reply from Alison: He is a very pleasant boy and works hard. He should do well

From Neil (5/5): (Primary Maths) Our daughter's confidence is increasing everytime she has a lesson with Alison. We've been really amazed to see her so enthused afterwards - and she is always keen to show us what she has learned. Alison is gentle, patient and full of praise for her efforts - and we are sure we couldn't have picked a better tutor.

From Colum (5/5): (GCSE Chemistry) Dear Alison,

I must apologise for my daughter. I can only think that she was reluctant to be tutored at this point as her answers to you gave a very poor impression of her readiness to sit the GCSE this summer. Her school report arrived on Friday and she is predicted A grades in both Core and Additional Science. She has areas of weakness which i know you would be well qualified to assist her with - but for now she wants to study by herself and rely upon her class teachers for support. I am sorry we cannot proceed further - I'm grateful to you for spending time with her.

regards

Colum Doyle

Reply from Alison: I find that pupils are often shy at a first visit . Part of my job is to increse their confidence. I can nearly always convince new pupils that they can indeed do the subject. Then we romp ahead.

Alison

From Edward (5/5): (Secondary Maths) A wonderful person that has helped our Daughters confidence considerably.

Reply from Alison: Thank you. Your daughter is a pleasure to teach, and very bright.

Alison

From Kaye (5/5): (GCSE Maths) We have just started with Alison and already my son and I feel very comfortable and confident that she will be able to help him with his maths. Very warm and friendly environment whilst teaching.

Reply from Alison: He is a bright student, though with big gaps in his knowlege. He should do very well.

From Sarah (5/5): (GCSE Chemistry) Rosie feels that she has learnt so much with Alison. She explains everything very clearly and make the lessons interesting.
She comes out of the lessons very happy and much more confident.
Thank you
