Information About Alan

Personal Description: I am a 27 year old graduate and have recently completed a PhD in mathematics at the University of Strathclyde. As an undergraduate I was offered the chance to take tutorials in computer science. As a result of this experience, I opted to be employed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, a position which allowed me four years to complete my PhD with a quarter of my time devoted to delivering lectures and tutorials in mathematics. Teaching was one of the most enjoyable aspects of my PhD and following its completion I successfully completed a PGDE teaching qualification at the University of Strathclyde (Jordanhill campus).

Tutoring Experience: I tutored computer science subjects up to 3rd year university level. I have tutored and lectured mathematics for the past five years from GCSE level up to university level. As well as classes aimed at mathematics students, I have taught mathematics to pharmacists, engineers, chemists and physicists. For the past year I have been qualifying to teach at high school level. Many years ago I also taught keyboard lessons!

Tutoring Approach: My tutoring approach is relaxed and I try to prompt students to talk about the subject they are learning. This often helps them to identify areas in which they feel they could improve and helps them to develop an analytical approach to exam questions. My preference is to teach by example but I feel it is important to find the method best suited to the individual student. I am willing to travel or to tutor from home if that is more convenient.
