Information About Toby - York teacher

Personal Description:

I am a qualified teacher and I teach a range of musical disciplines including academic music (GCSE, A Level and degree level), piano, music theory, music technology and composition. I can also offer Oxbridge preparation sessions and personal statement support.

I hold a First Class degree in Music from the University of Oxford and a Masters in Composition with Distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I attained A*A*A in my A Levels (Music, Religious Studies and English Literature) and Distinction in Grade 8 Piano.

I regularly tutor piano and theory (to grade 8), and composition and academic music (GCSE, A-Level and undergraduate degree level). I can also offer top-up sessions in aural and sight-reading to supplement regular piano lessons with another teacher, and interview and application preparation for students intending to study music at university (eg. Oxbridge). My students hold a 100% pass rate.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught in a range of independent and state schools across the UK, most recently leading the music department in a large sixth form college in the north of England. I am also a GCSE Music examiner and have worked on education projects for the Barbican's Creative Learning division, the One Foundation and Oxfordshire County Music Service.

I have been tutoring since 2011 and have taught a wide range of ages and abilities, from beginner piano through to degree level Music.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient and professional tutor, with wide-ranging experience across many different styles of music, and a flexible approach to suit the individual needs of each student. I am incredibly passionate about the power of music to enhance and enrich the lives of students, and love the opportunity that tutoring gives me to pass on my love for the subject to others. I am experienced at teaching in classroom situations, and tutoring in small group and one-to-one scenarios. I am equally at home teaching beginners and advanced students.
