Information About Thom

Personal Description: Thom is a professional drummer and has been playing drums for 12 years. Having completed a degree in Professional Musicianship at Brighton Institute of Modern Music he now teaches private lessons and at Sussex Academy of Music (Shoreham-by-Sea) as well as playing professionally in 2 originals bands, Mean Poppa Lean and Mechanical Bride, and 1 function band.

His inspiration comes from a combination of John Bonham’s heavy hitting, precision groove playing and Keith Moon’s insane energetic drumming that brings the drummer to the forefront of the band.

Thom got his first drum kit aged 12 and began lessons with Roger Willis (Capability Brown, Krazy Kats). At 15 he formed his first band Lament (later called They?). He took on his first student when he was 17. In 2004 he moved to Brighton and began studying at BIMM. It was at this time that he joined Mean Poppa Lean (Insanity Artists Agency), and began to teach private lessons. In early 2009 he joined his second band Mechanical Bride (Transgressive Records) and secured a job at SAM as a drum tutor.

With Mean Poppa Lean and Mechanical Bride, Thom has performed at V Festival, Isle of Wight, Great Escape Festival, Beachdown Festival, and toured the UK numerous times, as well as releasing several singles with MPL and an album with Mechanical Bride.

Currently he has 8 private drum students, with the list increasing steadily, and teaches full time at SAM and in 3 primary and secondary schools around Sussex as a SAM drum tutor representative. (Ashington CE Primary school, Shoreham Beach Primary school and Littlehampton Academy Secondary school.)

Tutoring Experience: Music Teaching Module - BA HONS in Professional Musicianship (Drums) 2:1

Head of drums at Sussex Academy of Music.

Drum tutoring in 3 Primary and Secondary schools (Ashington CE Primary School, Littlehampton Academy Secondary School & Shoreham Beach Primary School).

8 Private Students

Tutoring Approach: Every lesson I teach is tailored around the individual student’s musical taste, needs and ability. This way the student is motivated and focused throughout the lesson. My experience enables me to break drum teaching into 4 key areas:

Technical Development – To achieve a perfect technique, study of Moeller, posture, breathing and all aspects of drumming technique.
Sight Reading / Aural Perception – From basic notation and values to advanced chart reading, and listening to music, drum grooves, pieces and playing back. (Grades 1-8 also taught, if required)
Session Drummers – Studying a vast selection of drummers and genres.
Live Performance – Learning key performance techniques and songs to be performed live and along to tracks.

My lessons are taught from my own written syllabus with aspects of other workbooks and exercises, techniques to achieve the ultimate drumming experience and information.

I teach predominately in the Sussex area, but can travel further afield if needed. I have premises based in Brighton where I can teach from, but prefer to teach on each students own drum kit so that they feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

From Debbie (5/5): Our 11 year old son recently started learning drums with Thom . We are so impressed with Thom's dedication and expertise that I wanted to send this feedback. Thom's lessons are stimulating and fun whilst still including the essentials such as the reading of drum/ percussion music and attention to correct technique.
Thom has been gaining our son's interest by focusing on music styles relevant to his age group and from there is moving on to other styles.
Thom is happy to travel to our home for the lesson which is a huge bonus for a busy family! This way, we are easily able to exchange feedback with Thom re. progress.
I could not recommend Thom more highly.
