Personal Description:
I teach violin, acoustic, electric and bass guitar, ukulele and bass ukulele, mandolin, tenor banjo, and melodeon (a button keyed accordeon) at my home or, if you prefer, over the Internet. If you want guitar or uke, you don't need to read music and I already have over 2,400 songs of all types already written and chorded out, ready to go. If you want to learn a melody instrument, you can learn to read music quickly with me, or I'll show you how to play by ear or from TAB. I now offer lessons ONLINE, so it doesn't matter where you live, or face to face at my home.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been giving music lessons on a paid basis for 20 years, and also conducted music workshops at Folk Festivals for many years.
Tutoring Approach:
I do not teach for Grades or music exams. Each pupil is free to progress at his or her own speed. For guitar & uke, the basis of most styles is learning to play chords, although I can teach guitar fingerpicking styles like clawhammer as well, but not classical guitar. For fiddle, mandolin, tenor banjo & melodeon, learning to read music is a good idea to be able to pick more tunes up - I can teach that at the same time if needed, or teach by ear without it. People say that I am enthusiastic about music. Parents are free to sit in the music room or next door. I have successfully taught from 8 year olds to 78 year olds, and many skill levels from complete beginners upwards.

Within a handful of lessons Pete has got me starting to read music and work my way through a couple of tunes. He has a great blend of being patient and giving me challenges and is very generous with sending resources to practice with between lessons.

From Sharon (/5): Time for an update. I have been having lessons with Pete for 7months now, and am very happy with his style of teaching and the number of tunes available for the melodeon. He has also encouraged me to meet musicians locally , which l have done and met many interesting and helpful people.

From Samuel (/5): Pete has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to folk music and has instantly improved my understanding of the Mandolin and has introduced me to some excellent tunes.
I've played piano for years but always found it hard to transition to string instruments, but within a few weeks I'm able to easily play my mandolin from sheet music. He has also been very accommodating when it comes to organising lessons around my work schedule.

From Severin (/5): Pete is teaching the Ukulele to my 8 years old daughter and she enjoys her classes. She can chose the songs she likes and learns new ones regularly. She is always happy to join the session. Also the length (40 minutes) of the session is well adapted for kids.

From Sue (/5): Making steady progress. lessons are fun, and I'm playing songs that I choose. I'm not very good on music theory but Pete introduces concepts at my pace. The discipline of having a regular lesson slot is just what I need - finding a time was really convenient. So different from my music teacher experiences as a kid! So much better I mean. And also great value for money.

From Amanda (/5): Pete teaches to play songs rather than music and this is just what I wanted. I had lessons via zoom which I expected to be quite difficult but Pete was extremely good at bringing up music pages and Youtube links during the lesson which really added to the content of each lesson. I feel more confident playing and am having fun with my Ukulele.

He puts you at your ease and seems to have a gift for being able to 'tune in' to your level, ability and needs to provide a great teacher/ pupil relationship and environment for learning. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but condusive to learning. He never makes you feel that you may be lacking in ability and provides a very fun and positive experience, inspiring the desire to practice hard and improve to reach your full potential.
