Information About Katie

Personal Description: I began playing the flute and recorder at the age of 9. At the age of 10 I took up the bassoon, and at 12 piano. At age 16 I entered Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, with the bassoon as my principal study instrument where I learnt with Graham Salvage and Steve Magee (Halle). Here I passed my DipABRSM and A Levels, did aurul and theory work and continued my keyboard studies .

In 2003 I entered the Royal College of Music in London as a Foundation Scholar. Here I furthered my bassoon and contra bassoon studies (learning with Martin Gatt (LSO, LPO), Sarah Burnett (Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Britten Sinfonia, Haffner Quintet), Julie Price (BBCSO) and Nick Hunka (Contra, LSO)), played in numerous orchestras, chamber groups and solo concert and also undertook other academic and theoretical work. I also continued to play flute and piano. I graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree. I continued for one more year at the RCM on the Postgraduate Diploma course (sponsored by the Leverhulme Orchestral Mentor scholarship and the Countess of Munster trust), before last year going to Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague (Netherlands) for a further year of study. Since graduating I have played professionally with a number of orchestras, including the Halle orchestra in Manchester, and am a member of this year's Southbank Sinfonia.
During my years as a student I also did bassoon teaching for Ealing Junior Music School, a course on how to teach, outreach work and a conducting course. I have a number of private pupils, and a current CRB check.

Tutoring Experience: I currently teach mostly privately to pupils of varying ages and abilities. I have some pupils taking exams, and some just beginning their studies. I am also on Enfield Music Service's tutor list.
I have taught lessons as a guest teacher at Marlborough College, worked as a deputy bassoon tutor for Ealing Junior Music School, done work experience in various high schools and primary schools, done lots of outreach and education work, and also undertaken a course at the RCM on 'The Art of Teaching'. I have also worked in a (non musical) teaching environment, and so understand well the nature of teaching and learning. I have taught English as a foreign language to people of all ages and abilities, worked as a childminder and also worked with groups of disabled children.

Tutoring Approach: I try to work with students (and parents if appropriate) to find out what they want to achieve from their musical studies, and where they might see themselves heading, and then find the best possible path with regards to teaching method. For some, the traditional route of following methods and taking exams may be the best route, and for others, a different method of learning and achieving may be more suitable. Whilst I want to achieve the best possible results for my pupils, I also think that music making should be an enjoyable experience that can benefit many other areas of life. I believe in a flexible yet methodical approach to teaching, and am dedicated to pupils and their enjoyment and success.
