Personal Description: I am a folk musician. I play guitar, tenor banjo, mandolin and the Highland bagpipes. I'm also a singer. I have performed in many different places and in several countries over the last five years, and so far have undertaken about 200 paid performances

Tutoring Experience: I am a qualified school teacher, although, as is common among folk musicians, my university degree is not in music. (I hold a BA in Social Studies and and an MA in Environmental policy) However, I am a good music tutor and have been doing this for six years. I know that because people keep coming back to me, and they recommend their freinds too.

Tutoring Approach: I tell students that they are learing to communicate musical feeling to their audience, whatever instrument they are studying. Students need to appreciate the the components from which all music is assembled: rhythm, melody and harmony. I think that music notation is a very useful way of noting these down, but for guitarists it is not compulsory. I also think that students should listen to different styles of music from around the world. You never know what your ears are missing.
