Information About David

Personal Description: David has enjoyed a wide variety of musical activities from an early age, and has, since 1998, forged a wide-ranging career in the performing arts. Born in Winchester, Hampshire, but now based in Lichfield, Staffordshire, he combines a busy schedule of teaching, composing, accompanying and writing across the UK.

Specialising in teaching flute, piano and singing, David founded his hugely successful private teaching practice in Gloucester in 2001. Since moving to Lichfield in 2010, he continues to maintain a deep interest in, and wholehearted commitment to music education, developing innovative teaching methods, comprehensive and well-rounded curricula, and workshop-based and performance opportunities for students.

He works with a wide range of ages and abilities, encouraging each individual to explore a varied assortment of musical experiences and activities. He holds teaching diplomas for both piano and flute, and a Masters Degree in Education from The Open University. He is a Full Member of both the ISM and EPTA.
Tutoring Experience: Lessons take place at David’s home in Lichfield, and spaces are usually available both daytimes and evenings (availability does vary – please enquire). Children and adults are all welcome, as are beginners and also advanced pupils. David has run a successful and very popular teaching practice since 2001; currently pupils travel from as far afield as Sutton Coldfield, Stone, Tamworth and Burntwood. Taking exams is not compulsory – music is for life, not just for exams.
Tutoring Approach: As a teacher, David’s particular skills include:

> The ability to patiently increase confidence, particularly in adult learners and teenagers;
> Having faith in those who say ‘I can’t’ or who have little confidence in their abilities;
> Being good humoured, and sensitive to individual personalities;
> A concern that learning a musical instrument should be about more than a weekly individual lesson; in the past, both concerts and workshops have been hugely popular.
Qualifications:
  • 2010: MEd - The Open University (Masters)
  • 2009: DipABRSM - ABRSM (Other)
  • 2009: LLCM - LCM (Other)
