Personal Description:

I am married with two daughters and have over 25 years of teaching experience. I currently work as a woodwind, singing and piano teacher in an Academy High School and i also run two choirs locally. I play regularly with orchestras and i also am a keen accordionist with a folk group.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught instrumental lessons since leaving university 30 years ago. Clarinet has always been my main instrument with piano and saxophone being joint second areas of study. I spent a number of years in France, where i set up and ran a very successful choir and as i result i had a large number of singing pupils of all ages and different nationalities. Since returning to the UK, i have been working in local primary schools teaching clarinet, saxophone, flute and piano and i also run 2 choirs. One is for children between the ages of 7 and 16 and the other is for the over 50s.

Tutoring Approach:

First and foremost, music has to be fun. I believe that you will only get out what you are prepared to put in and the more you put in, the more fun you will have. I also believe that there is room for all different types of music and i try to adapt my way of teaching to accommodate the individual. Being able to read music is not the be all and end all and many people prefer to play by ear or to improvise. It is important to find the best way to work for the pupil.
