Information About Aaron

Personal Description: I am a Leeds based sax/clarinet/piano player/composer, originally from Belfast Northern Ireland. I was the leader of the Ulster Youth Jazz Orchestra for 3 years and also played in the Belfast Jazz Orchestra, City of Belfast Youth Concert Band and the City of Belfast School of Music Big Band. I enjoy composing for lots of different mediums including orchestra, small group and solo instruments but most of my work is for Big Band. I enjoy the challenge of composing for a specific purpose e.g. film scoring or commissions and have scored a handful of student films. In addition I have extensive performance experience and have played in sax quartets, jazz combos, orchestras, big bands, musical theatre orchestras/bands and undertaken work as a session musician. Some pof this work involved TV/radio broadcasts. I was the soprano/tenor sax player for the premiere of Brian Irvine's jazz opera "The Tailor's Daughter". I have toured extensively in Europe, USA and here in the UK with groups ranging from concert bands to orchestras to big bands. I studied jazz at Leeds College of Music.

Tutoring Experience: Currently teaching at South Leeds Music Centre and have taught privately for the last 5 years. I have experience of both the ABRSM and Trinity College syllabus. I also have group activity, workshop and large group directing experience. I teach both classical and jazz. Lessons range from "just for fun" to graded exams. Improvisation is a speciality. IMy students have a 100% pass rate for all exam boards. I am also able to teach music theory and assist with GSCE, As and A Level exams (composition, practical and theory).

Tutoring Approach: I believe that music should be taught and learned in a fun, supportive environment with as much input from the student as from the tutor. If its not enjoyable then its probably not worth doing and as long as the student has fun in a lesson I believe they will gain the skills they need to progress. I am comfortable teaching children and adults alike and can vary my approach accordingly. I do not charge a travel supplement and will happily accomodate lessons in your own home or in mine.

From Sean (5/5): Aaron is a fantastic teacher. I've only had a few lessons and progressing really well. Aaron's unique teaching style in which he easily blends your practical and theory together so you can enjoy playing and understand what you are playing.

His "hawk eye" and great hearing qualities means that he picks up on any mistakes I've made and works on my technique to make sure that the issues dissolve away.

Aaron is also extremely dynamic with his approach to teaching - I have a whiteboard with marker pens and he wrote out "three blind mice" for me to play to work on my scales.

I am more than pleased with the tuition I am getting from Aaron and hope to keep being mentored by him for years to come.

Reply from: Aaron: Cheers Sean, such detail!

From Mark (4/5): Solid knowledge

From Dalton (5/5): Very friendly and polite. Dalton appears to get on with you and is learning very quickly. Would recommend as a tutor.

From Alice (5/5): A lovely guy, very reliable and makes learning the saxophone fun for my 14 year old daughter. Highly reccommended
