Information About Ning

Personal Description: I am a native Chinese speaker. In August, I finished my postgraduate study at Moray House School of Education, The University of Edinburgh. My interest is language learning and teaching. Due to my exceptional grades at the Masters level, I am considered for a distinction by the School. Starting from August, I work as the Mandarin Chinese teacher at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. I am in charge of the Chinese curriculum and responsible for the teaching of Chinese learners from beginners to advanced level. I mentored the winner of **Telephone Number Removed** HSBC/British Council Mandarin Chinese Speaking Competition. Currently, I am doing PhD in Education in Edinburgh University fully funded by the University and the School of Education.

My enthusiasm in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages derived from my undergraduate study at Beijing Foreign Studies University, China. While I was studying at BFSS, I explored my zest for the basic knowledge of both Chinese and English language, literature and culture through various teaching and learning practices. My overall GPA results and honoured degree are the demonstration for my excellent undergraduate study.

Teaching Experience: I have had many years of intercultural working experience. Starting from my first year in college, I became an English tutor for several Chinese secondary school students. I committed myself to tutoring those children: several times a week and non-stop for over three years. It was definitely a valuable experience, because over this period of time, I developed a good and trustworthy relationship with my students. In fact, I even helped one of them win the national scientific prize.

Besides, I have had the chance to work with the IES Abroad programme for three years. It’s a study abroad programme for American undergraduate students. From 2006 to 2009 I have been a Chinese tutor for several American students, developed my own teaching approaches and made many friends. Furthermore, during the summer of 2009, I also helped some European students learn Chinese. For me, no matter where my students come from, and no matter what I’m teaching - Chinese or English, it’s all about raising intercultural awareness and facilitate their learning process through various kinds of interaction.

Also, as mention in the introduction, I am the Chinese teacher at a secondary school in Edinburgh since August 2010. Currently, I am also responsible for teaching some of the Master's course at the university.
