Your First Language Lesson

Setting the Scene

We always recommend learning in a quiet room if possible so that teacher and learner can work without disturbance. Please note that if the learner is under 18 a parent or guardian should be present during lessons.

If you have arranged to go to the teacher's home, please think safety first and ensure that the learner does not visit alone until comfortable with the teacher.

Before your First Language Lesson

It is helpful to think about what you want to achieve from your language lessons.

We recommend all learners to ask to see any qualifications the teacher has declared in the first lesson. If the teacher has a CRB check (police check) or has said they can offer references ask to see these as well in the first lesson. We advise language teachers to expect this request so they will not be offended!

First Lesson

  • Is an opportunity for you to see how you get along with the teacher.
  • The teacher will want to talk through your motivation for learning a language and understand what you are hoping to get out of the lessons.
  • The teacher will do some exercises with you to stretch you and understand your attainment level so far - don't be bashful, you're not supposed to be able to speak the language yet!

As your Language Lessons Progress

  • Don't be afraid to ask your teacher to raise or ease the pace or difficulty of lessons.
  • If you would like to change anything about the lessons (direction, structure) just mention it to your teacher. For example, if you would prefer to concentrate on spoken communication or a particular area of vocabulary, be sure to tell the teacher in advance so he/she can prepare accordingly.
  • Help other learners by providing feedback about your language teacher through First Tutors: Languages.
