7 brilliant websites and apps to help with homework

by Anita Naik

It can be challenging to help your child with homework, especially if they keep telling you you're not explaining it correctly. The good news is there is a range of websites and apps that can help you to help them. Here's what you need to know.

BBC Bitesize

BBC Bitesize is a fantastic site written by teachers and experts that takes you from primary through to secondary. It emphasises all GCSE subjects, breaking down subjects by exam board and specification, critical concepts per subject, revision help, videos and tests to practice your exam skills. If you're not at that level yet, KS2 and KS3 are also broken down similarly and are a fantastic resource for revision, projects and homework.

Revision World

For those who need help with their homework or revising for GCSEs or A Levels, Revision World is one of the best websites to use. Aside from academic resources for GCSE and A-level students, there are tips for creating revision timetables and forums where students can get help with their homework and revision.

Quizlet

Tests are the cornerstone of secondary school life and a known way for students to learn the material and increase their expertise on a specific topic. Quizlet is an app aimed at helping with tests by boosting comprehension and retrieval in any subject. The application is free for anyone with the option to switch to premium. Information is organised into user, or teacher-generated study sets that users add to their accounts. When using the app, students log in and choose the appropriate study set for the concepts they need to review. These can be created by a teacher or generated by other users.

Duolingo

Duolingo is the world's most-downloaded education app! It's a free app for learning 40+ languages through quick, bite-sized lessons. Practice speaking, reading, listening and writing to build your vocabulary and grammar skills. What's more, while Duolingo's lessons feel more like a game, they are based on a methodology proven to foster long-term memory of what's being learned, machine learning technology that personalises learners' experience, and curricula informed by national and international standards.

My homework student planner

This is a free homework planner for pupils, GCSE and A-level students. Students need to enter their homework assignments and track deadlines by class or date. It's a great way to encourage disorganised students to keep track of their work, especially assignments, revision plans and tests.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy offers practice exercises and instructional videos to empower learners to study in and outside the classroom at their own pace. The site tackles math, science, computing, history, art history, economics, and more, including K-14 and test preparation. The focus is on skill mastery to help learners establish strong foundations.

First Tutors

We have many thousands of tutors nationwide, covering various subjects. Whether your child needs to prepare for your SATs, Maths GCSE or brush up on your French, we can help. Students that struggle often need to practice more at home. However, it's hard to practice alone when you need to figure out what you are doing or where you may be going wrong. A tutor can help by identifying where your child needs help and practice with homework, subjects and exams.
