Information About James

Personal Description: I am a professional actor. I attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) from where I graduated in 2006. One of my most exciting credits was playing David Harvey in Lewis for ITV1. I am a member of Actors' Equity, The Spotlight and am represented by Curtis Brown Group.
My devotion to teaching has run in parallel with my acting work and I find that both professions inform and compliment each other perfectly.
Additionally I work as the artistic director of BlankThorn, a theatre company dedicated to the young professional.
In my spare time I like to read widely, play tennis and write.

Teaching Experience: I have had two years experience assisting on the RADA preliminary audition panel. I have worked through RADA as a workshop leader in schools ( Bodmin College in Cornwall, St Leonard's Independent School in Fife). A typical day would involve travelling to the school, meeting the Head of Drama and then leading a three hour workshop exploring a particular text, improvising around it, then at our own pace beginning to move and speak it.
I have my own business working as a private tutor, my specialism is tutoring prospective drama school applicants audition technique; helping with speeches, sight reading and the interview. (Though this is not all by any means!)

Teaching Approach: I approach tutoring in an accessible, clear and approachable manner. My students will be encouraged, motivated and supported. I will ensure that students feel able to perform in the knowledge that I am here to help and not to judge.
We are actors working together, I will listen to you and won't 'over-teach'. I believe is the experience of drama and acting, of 'doing' that improves performance skills.
There is a tremendous amount of acting theory to be read and confined to the library. I teach in a concise, digestible way and champion the idea that acting isn't an intellectual activity, it is a human one.

Qualifications:
  • First class BA (Hons) Acting (RADA)
  • 'A' Level English Literature, (B) History, (B), Psychology, (B) and Theatre Studies (B).

From Sofia (5/5): James was an excellent tutor, he help me with everything i needed to know to pass in the audicions, and i did. I passed the first stage, and im realy grateful to him. Thank you… now lets see how it goes…

From Urbain (5/5): Jim is both very experienced and very professional. I was looking for some elocution lessons to improve my presentation skills. I have found his voice coaching to be very effective. He's varied the exercises to keep the lessons engaging and he's provided constructive feed-back.
