Personal Description:

Experienced teacher of English with an MA (Honours) in English from Auckland University. I am a NZ registered secondary school teacher with a Diploma of Teaching from the Auckland College of Education and endorsed by the NZ Department of Education. My main teaching subject is English but I have also taught Social Studies, History (my second majoring subject), Classical Studies and Art History. I have helped primary school pupils improve their general skills in English as well as prepare Intermediate age students for secondary school. In addition, I have the Cambridge University CELTA Certificate for teaching English to foreign students and have had much experience teaching ESOL to young, school age learners as well as adults from overseas.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been high school teaching, and have also done after school tuition, for many years here in Auckland and also in the UK where I taught GCSE and A levels English which demand a high level of competency in English literature and language. My teaching experience in English, here in NZ, has included NCEA (levels 1,2 & 3) as well as the International Cambridge course (IGCSE and A levels). My teaching practice has also included teaching English to foreign students, at a couple of Auckland language schools, where I gained experience teaching Beginners - Upper Intermediate levels. I have also helped foreign students with their coursework and examination preparation for the IELTS programme.

Tutoring Approach:

I live in Epsom which is central Auckland and I prefer to tutor at my place where I have access to many teaching resources. I have found that tutoring one to one works best for students because you can focus on their individual and particular learning needs as well as build up a good working relationship based on mutual respect. I have found that most students often need help with spelling, grammar, reading comprehension, writing skills, how to prepare for examinations along with specific coursework tasks from their school. My students' progress and results in their English coursework and examinations invariably improve, significantly, as a result of my tuition. I am available to teach during school holidays if so required.
