Personal Description: I hold a Bachelor of Arts (with a double major in Politics and Philosophy) and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Politics. My preference is to tutor within the East-Auckland area (Howick, Botany, Packuranga, Bucklands Beach, etc). I am willing to work with my student to find the teaching method that suits him/her the best. English is my first language and I have also traveled extensively throughout Southeast Asia and South America.
Tutoring Experience: While I studied I worked as a private tutor teaching second language students (often ESOL students) in high school-level English. This involved one-on-one teaching at students' houses - helping them with their homework; teaching grammar and vocabulary; reading; assigning and marking essays; and preparing them for SATs, Cambridge examinations, and NZCA examinations. I am currently teaching an after-school class in English reading and writing through Mt Hobson Middle School.
Tutoring Approach: I am happy to come to a student's own home or work with them in the library. During a typical lesson, I offer assistance with my student's own school work, then mark and discuss the homework I assigned during the previous lesson, and finally work through some reading material together that I have selected.
If preferred, I am willing to engage in one-on-one conversation with English learners as I am aware that some (particularly adults) choose to improve their English in this manner.
The aim of my tutoring method is to support and guide the student, encouraging him/her to engage as fully as possible with the material and build his/her confidence with the English language.
