Personal Description: I am a full time teacher with extensive experience in helping children and young teens to achieve in English. I am originally from Zimbabwe where I owned and operated a private boarding school for children with learning difficulties. In New Zealand I have experience teaching at Intermediate level and also with the Learning Support Faculty of a High School. I develop supportive and lasting relationships with my students and their families.
Tutoring Experience: I have been teaching for 29 years in total, 20 of which have included private tuition. My experience in learning support and special education includes working with children who have Dyslexia; Autism; ADD; ADHD; Foetal Alcohol syndrome; Down Syndrome; Cerebral Palsy and undiagnosed learning difficulties. I have also worked with children and adults for whom English is a second language.
Tutoring Approach: I use an eclectic approach, drawing intensively from Hornsby's Alpha to Omega and The Bannatyne Reading Programme but also using a wide range of appropriate resources. The first session will be longer than the normal lessons and will include written and oral assessment followed up with an interview which includes student and parents or caregivers, where I will gather background information, determine expectations and so on. Following this a comprehensive written report will be issued, outlining the programme which will be followed initially. Please note that my assessment is of a formative nature and is not intended to be diagnostic.
